Burst pipes
If you have a burst or faulty pipe, turn the main water supply off by:
- Turning the main stop tap to the right (clockwise)
- Pressing the sure stop switch (if there is one)
To shut off the water supply to a fixture such as a toilet or basin, you may be able to use the service valve on the pipe leading to it if one is fitted.

Legionnaires’ disease
Legionnaires’ disease is caused by bacteria that can live in hot and cold water systems, storage tanks, pipework, taps and showers.
The risk of contracting Legionnaires’ in your own home is rare, but there are things you can do to reduce it:
- Keep your cistern covered, insulated, clean and free from debris
- Let us know if your pipe work isn’t insulated, as we’ll do this for you
You’re more at risk of contracting Legionnaires’ disease when you move into a new home or return home after a long break. To flush out any bacteria and reduce this risk run your shower or hot tap continuously for at least 5 minutes when you move in or return after a long break.
If you’re going away for more than two weeks, please let us know. If you don’t, we may think you’ve abandoned your home.
Hot water thermostat
Accidents involving overheating hot water are rare. However, your thermostat may be overheating if there is:
- Excessively hot water coming out of the hot taps
- Excessive noise or ‘bubbling’ from the hot water cylinder
- Hot water coming out of the cold taps in the bathroom (if the cistern also feeds these taps)
- Steam or moisture in the roof space
If you think this may be the case, please turn off the thermostat and call our repairs team on 01594 838 000.
